To the incoming class of Duncaroos,

I am Louis Cole, the Duncan president for this upcoming year. I am a Houston native studying Chemical Physics. I am a rising senior and still have no idea what I want to do with my life after graduation. However, when I am not having an existential crisis, you can find me doing research in Dr. Hafner’s lab or playing Xbox for an unnecessary amount of time.

On behalf of us all at Duncan, I want to say not only welcome to Rice, but more importantly welcome to Duncan! The odds were definitely in your favor as you have been sorted into the largest, newest, and objectively best college at Rice. As you begin your time here at Rice, I want you to know that Duncan is not just a dormitory. It is a place where you will grow in many aspects of your life and you can find you family away from home.

I know the idea of moving to college can be daunting. For some of you, it may be your first time away from home. With that being said, my challenge to you is to take advantage of the opportunities that lie inside and out of the hedges. Push yourself to become the best version of you that you can be, and if you are concerned about messing up, don’t worry, the Duncan family and Rice have an abundance of resources to support you.

I cannot wait to meet you all!

Louis E. Cole ‘20
