Masters A member of the faculty (usually a tenured professor) and their family takes on this position and lives in a house adjacent to the residential college. As a representative of the college, they often interface with other departments around Rice on behalf of Duncan. Masters also help promote a variety of cultural/intellectual interests among the students and aim to help young professionals grow as leaders. Head Resident Fellows With Duncan and McMurtry’s large capactiy, Rice decided that HRFs would be needed in addition to RAs. They are the only people who live on the first floor and they live in the HRF apartment. This position is not extremely defined, so it’s up to the current HRFs to make it what they choose. Luis and Marnie (our current masters) were our first HRFs, but it was not long before we made Luis our master! After that, he took on very master-ly duties. Since our first year was a special case of having both an HRF and a master at the same time in the same person, the current position of HRF is open to Sean and Kate’s interpretation and we’re confident they’ll be awesome! Resident Associates The RAs are faculty and staff who live among the college students at Duncan! Even though they are considered authority figures by the administration, they are much more like big brothers or sisters. RAs are not here to make sure you do your homework or go to bed on time, but instead they are another part of the Duncan support system. With study breaks and cook outs, the RAs put forth a lot of effort into making sure students feel welcome and comfortable in their new home! College Coordinator The College Coordinator is here to help students with a variety of things: mail, packages, stamps, envelopes, faxes, photocopies, and so much more! Associates Rice is all about learning in your living space. One of the many ways this happens is through the Associates Program. Each college is assigned ‘associates’ who are either Rice faculty, staff, or members of the Houston area (often alumni); these associates are an active part of the college, joining in everything from academic advising to cheering-on sports teams. The goal of the program is to facilitate casual interactions with neat people, so you’ll meet with these associates informally throughout the year. This means you can have lunch with a world-renowned scholar, dinner with the Dean of the Shepherd School, shoot the breeze with a professor outside of class, meet some of the amazing Rice staff, or get to know some of the most incredible Houston community members. Divisional Advisors The divisional Advisors are an excellent resource for new students entering Rice University. During O-Week, each student is matched up with an advisor within their division (engineering, social sciences, humanities etc...) to help schedule classes. Of course, one can meet with these advisors in future semesters to come! See your divisional advisors below! |
